Some Recommended Natural Cough Remedies

By Christine Barnes

People cough when the body wants to get rid of unwanted substances that obstruct the air passages in the nose, the mouth and the lungs. If an individual decides to cough intentionally, it is said to be a voluntary action but when it happens automatically in such a way that the individual has no role to play in the sudden action, it is referred to an involuntary process.

Irregular coughs are caused by the lack of adequate air and oxygen, a condition known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). A cough can be caused by acute bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, allergies, and emphysema. Research has revealed that there are various natural cough remedies for patients who suffer from the condition.

For instance, natural honey has been proven to be very effective in the treatment of coughs. It contains a sugary fluid from the nectar. The sweetness of honey can be attributed to simple sugars from the plant. The bees are responsible for the production of honey which acts as suppressants for coughs. It must also be noted that the antibacterial qualities in the fluid help to fight against bacteria, fungi, viruses and other micro-organisms.

Peppermint is another cure for the treatment of this condition. The flavor is normally used in home made products such as toothpaste, sweeteners and holiday treats. Peppermint, also known Mentha piperita, is a plant that is borne out of the cross breeding of spearmint and water mint respectively. It is an antibacterial agent and a stimulant. It can be chewed fresh, prepared as tea, or bought from the medical stores. The methanol content is useful in breaking down mucus and hence, soothes the throat.

Thyme has also been used for the treatment of coughs. It contains oil which helps to relieve the patients from conditions such as acute bronchitis. It also contains thymol, which fights against mouth odor and tooth decay. Flavonoids are also found in thyme. This chemical content contributes to making the thyme substance an herbal plant rich in antioxidants.

Knotted and underground stems such as ginger have many medicinal uses. Apart from being the healing agents for the condition, gingers can work effectively in the stomach and intestines to fight against conditions such as nausea and inflammation. It can also be combined with hot water and other citrus fruits to work against dry throats or eaten raw when sliced or peeled.

Allium Sativum or garlic is rich in antibacterial and antimicrobial contents. It is from the onion family and has been considered useful in making the throat and the membrane lubricated. Garlic cloves are eaten raw or cooked. It also contains vital nutrients that help to fight against respiratory problems and lowers the risks of stomach cancers.

Fresh grapes are good expectorants. Expectorants are agents or ingredients that work by signaling the body to remove mucus from the lungs by dissolving chemical bonds in the secretions and increasing the urge to cough. These expectorants or mucolytic agents can be found in drugs such as potassium iodide, potassium citrate, and sodium citrate.
