This team approach is incredibly important to ensuring that you or your love one gets the best and most comprehensive care.

Normally, all that the survivor needs to succeed are three teams to work with. These teams are the therapist team, the support team, and the medical team. The orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon mostly is in charge of acute care as soon as an injury is reported and is the one to come up with long term rehabilitation plan.

The dietician, the psychologist, the physiotherapist and the rehabilitation nurse are the other specialists on the medical team. They play unique roles in order to meet the specific needs of the survivor. For instance, the physiotherapist is the coordinator/supervisor of every aspect of the patient's rehabilitation, and he does this together with other knowledgeable physical therapists.

The coordinator of all nursing care and one who answers the questions bothering the survivor and his/her relatives concerning spinal injury is the rehabilitation nurse. Due to the injury, the patient would require a totally different form of diet in order to speed up the process and as such a dietician will come in handy to handle such requirement in a professional manner. After all said and done, for the survivor and family to be able to handle the new phase of life, the psychologist will be available for any advice or counseling.

It is the therapist's responsibility to work with the patient during the rehabilitation stage so that the survivor can be returned to optimum health. For the survivor to have the best of strength, endurance and motion, the physical therapist must help the survivor. Apart from that, he or she must help the patient to be able to go through the process of locating the wheelchair, transferring to it, sitting in it, and operating it.

If there are speech or communication problems, then a speech therapist would be an important team member. A recreational therapist helps to determine the survivor's function level and then introduces him or her to activities that would bring back independence and fun back to the survivor's life. Finally, a respiratory therapist would be brought on-board for survivors who are having difficulty breathing as a result of spinal cord injury.

The final team is the support team. This team is made up of a variety of specialists who would help the survivor navigate life post spinal cord injury. A social worker would help the survivor deal with things like finances, relationships, and lifestyle changes.

It's the case manager's responsibility to handle insurance issues between the survivor and the company who provides the insurance. The vocational counselor is there to assist with types of work available and the engineer is to work on assisted aids for use by the patient. From the critical stage to the rehabilitation stage, those on the team determine how successful things turn out.
