The Tennessee Marijuana Legalization Bill Of 2014

By Arline Bradley

A new bill has been presented to the Tennessee House of Representatives. The Koozer-Kuhn Medical Cannabis Act, is a Tennessee marijuana legalization bill that promotes the use of marijuana for medical reasons. Local advocates and organizations have been attempting to make cannabis legal for personal use for decades.

While there are proponents desiring full legalization, most believe only medical will become law. The establishment of a medical program would still be progress. Many cancer patients and others who qualify for medical cards will be extremely grateful if this is the case.

Some states which have supported full legalization have created a new era of public discussion. Cannabis and various forms of use are now being discussed in coffee shops, restaurants, newspapers and online in all areas of the country. Whereas for the last 100 years, individuals were fearful of even mentioning marijuana due to the strict laws which many states impose.

Decriminalization in conservative states like Texas is progress. It was only 100 years ago when individuals could buy cannabis over the counter, or place mail orders in the State. It became illegal to possess or use cannabis beginning with Texas in the early 1900s, after which other states followed suit.

Colorado and Washington, states which recently legalized marijuana for personal use have created a reality in which people across the nation are discussing the issue in public forums, meetings and online. Discussions which in the past could have lead to arrest on suspicion holding or using illegal drugs. This may still be the case in some areas though most feel if marijuana can be legalized in some states, it need be legalized in all.

In a country where twenty one states have now legalized marijuana for medical use, and where two have legalized the herb for personal use, change is on the way. While Colorado and Washington have chose to make cannabis fully available, there are guidelines. Otherwise, there would be those who simply buy from the local dispensaries to sell at higher prices in areas without such programs.

Representatives may very well sign this new bill into law in Tennessee. This is because of an ongoing belief that if cannabis can can cure diseases such as cancer, it can also prevent same. Others remain distant in hopes of full legalization while others remain opposed with regards to both legal and medical use.

Many State lawmakers once opposed to legalizing cannabis in entirety are now more open to listening to local community members in public forums. In many areas, this alone is progress. Representatives also suggest that if local residents can prove medical cannabis is a good idea, views and votes may change.

A number of individuals in the United States believe legalizing cannabis on a federal level is still a better option. Only time will tell as to whether Tennessee, Texas and other conservative areas will become more open minded and follow suit with Colorado and Washington. Or, whether individuals suffering from cancers and other disease who wish to try medical cannabis, will ever have the opportunity.
