Once you have discussed all these with the doctor, he or she will carry out a thorough exam. Te exam involves examining much more than the teeth including the head and the neck. In the head and neck areas, he or she will check for, bleeding or any other abnormalities. The temporomandibular joint will also be checked. It is where the lower jaws pivots as you open the mouth.

You will have to move the jaw sideways as you open and close your mouth. The dentist will use this to see if it is working well. Alternatively, they can touch the joint while you are opening and closing and your mouth. The movements and hitches at the joint will enable determine if there is a problem.

The salivary glands and lymph node will be checked for any signs swelling or tenderness. These signs indicate that you may have an infection or a dental disease. The tongue will also be checked. On most occasions, we always forget to clean our tongue and these can lead to so many problems. So they will check both the upper and lower part of the tongue while looking for spots, swellings, cuts, growths or abnormalities.

You may also go thorough periodontal exam that entails the teeth structure and the gums. They check the gums for any signs of redness or being puffy. At the time, they may poke so that they see how fast it bleeds. If it bleeds fast, it may shoe that you have gum disease. So if they find that you have periodontal disease, they refer you to a special in dealing with periodontal issues.
