Understanding Bikini Hip Replacement Procedure And Its Advantages

By Jaclyn Hurley

The bikini hip replacement is a surgical procedure that targets to replace hip joints with a prosthetic implant. This can either be a total or semi replacement and is common to relieve arthritis pain. It is also performed to fix severe damages resulting from fractures. For total surgery also known as total hip arthroplasty, both the acetabulum and femoral head are replaced while only the femoral head is replaced in case of hemiarthroplasty (half surgery).

For patients suffering from most of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, protrusio acetabula, benign, malignant bone tumor, ankylosing spondylitis and any bikini fracture among several other related conditions all qualify for this procedure. It helps to relieve pain and allow the patient to resume other physical activities.

It is normally a minimally invasive anterior surgery procedure. Given that the incision is done through the bikini line, the end result is a cosmetically pleasing scar that is hidden in the groin crease. Expert surgeons are able to achieve a mini-incision with the least damages to nerve and muscular tissues. Most of tendons and muscles are preserved and the few that are cut in the process are then repaired allowing for very quick recovery after the process.

Being a very popular form of surgery, the level of safety and simplicity has improved by great extent, all thanks to modern technology particularly in the field of medicine. Most surgeons are now recommending this procedure for their patients as there is less time needed for recovery and the total price tag is significantly reduced. The implants that are used quickly grow into bones.

The procedure involves minimal reduction of the surrounding tissues and bone so as to eradicate soreness. The next step is to gently insert the implant using two portals that are fewer than two inches when extended. The implants may be made of ceramics, plastics or metals although metallic implants are becoming less popular. The majority of patients will be free to go home in a day or two as the recovery time is reduced by as much as fifty percent as compared to when additional invasive surgery strategies is used.

This is however not a procedure that will be recommended for very obese people and the category of patients who are very masculine as it becomes very difficult even on the hand of highly experienced surgeons. When complex hip revision is necessary, the procedure may also not work given the necessity for more incisions.

It comes with several advantages when compared to the traditional surgeries that targets to solve the same problems. For instance, there is less pain, minimal blood loss with less wound hence reduced chances of infections. In addition to this, the muscle weakness and immobilization is highly reduced with well hidden scar and reduced chances of dislocation.

With the help of a well-trained and very experienced surgeon, most of the side effects and possible complications may not be experienced. The possible side effects include bleeding, blood clots and infections although there are very few cases that are reported. The prosthesis may also loosen and there may be discrepancy on the length of limb. All these calls for the need of a highly experienced surgeon and well equipped medical center.
