Finding The Right Seborrheic Dermatitis Skin Care

By Karina Frost

There is a malady that affects thousands of people by causing red scaly blotches to appear on their faces and bodies in a very unpredictable fashion. It can be annoying and embarrassing to live with and there is no permanent resolution to this problem. Finding the proper seborrheic dermatitis skin care becomes a major priority to those who must suffer through this condition.

It is not known what exactly causes this problem for some people but not others but it has been likened to dandruff and many times appears next to the hair line on the face and neck. It can also show up in body creases such as around the nose or on the chin and mid-forehead. Facial areas where there can be large concentrations of oil build up are most prone to being affected.

It is known that the body's production of excessive oils enhance the growth of a lipophilic yeast fungus that originates in the Malassezia genus. This is an intricate part of the eruption of scaly patches on face and body. Left untreated the problem will become worse over time. Treatment can be done with or without doctors involvement and some home remedies are very effective.

The homemade remedies involve items found in most kitchens. One recipe suggests using a lemon juice and garlic mixture on the affected area. Leaving it there for five to ten minutes and then using a mild cleanser to bathe the area. Olive oil treatments have also proven successful for some people as well as fish oil supplements on a daily basis. Another home treatment that nearly everyone has access to is sunshine and exercise. They have been shown to be very effective in many cases.

With the exception of a few creams most over the counter remedies are designed for treatment of dandruff. These products can also be used for other areas if they contain the appropriate ingredients. Looking for these ingredients on labels will help determine their effectiveness. One such item is salicylic acid. This powerful exfoliate dissolves the bond between skin cells and allows old damaged tissue to be washed away.

Fungicides such as coal tar and tea tree oil work to kill the malassezia that causes this problem on your face. Coal tar can be found in most shampoo treatments and tea tree oil can be purchased separately or as an ingredient in many creams. Tea tree oil, when tested in clinical trials has demonstrated the highest level of success in treating this problem.

Zinc is a chemical element that can help by preventing new flakes from appearing. It can also even out the texture of the face. It will help decrease the amount of sebum produced by the face and this in turn lessens the severity of the rash when it appears. Finding these ingredients in retail products can be a key to home treatment.

If you have a serious breakout of this problem it is important that you see a medical professional for assistance. The prescription medications available are more effective and are available in topical or oral doses. Either way, the solution is never permanent and continued care programs can help reduce the number and frequency of future outbreaks.
