In an emergency, it is the first three twenty-four hour periods that are the most critical so it is best to be ready for whatever life aims your way.

There are so many events that can constitute an emergency that may require such preparation. It could be a tornado, hurricane, nuclear bomb, enemy attack, or one of several other scenarios. No matter what the case, being prepared with essential supplies may save the lives of you and all of your family members.

This supply must include several critical items to get you through this first time period. It sometimes takes days for emergency resources to converge and get critical supplies to the areas affected. By having your own store of items, you will be well-prepared to take on much more than others. The basic items one needs include food, water, first-aid supplies, communication devices, shelter, warmth and food prep equipment.

You can actually purchases boxes and bags of prepared food items in case of these situations. For such a short time period, you can also assemble your own necessities. Some of the items you may wish to consider are powdered drinks and milk, dried foods such as meats, beans, and fruit, canned goods such as soups and stews, and power bars for the energy you will need. Water should always be ready to grab. Containers can be filled and stored days in advance. Gallon jugs or larger receptacles can also be purchased and available.

First aid should include band aids, antibiotics, scissors, a thermometer, aspirin, tape, and gauze. This kit should also include any current medications taken by family members and a first aid book. Communication devices could consist of two-way radios, a battery powered radio, and cell phones with portable chargers. Don't forget to include extra batteries for any devices that require them.

Other items needed will include flashlights, matches, lighters, a hammer or hatchet, and a manual can opener. Sanitation items, soap, and baby and pet supplies may also be needed depending on your family dynamics. Always include contact information for other family members, personal documents such as drivers licenses, birth certificates and social security cards, and maps of the surrounding areas.

The type of shelter you require will depend on the emergency and the part of the country where you live. Those who live in areas with harsh winters or heavy rains will need more adequate shelter than those who reside in warm or tropical states. The type of emergency will determine whether you must leave your home or not. If you do, you will need a tent or at the very minimum, a large tarp, rope and stakes. Blankets and sleeping bags are also needed. A company that specializes in preparing for disasters will have special blankets that hold in the warmth much more efficiently.

Being proactive when it comes to natural or man-made emergencies is what will make a difference in your survival. Begin your preparations by assembling these items and others that are pertinent to your family's sustainability.
