Benefits Colloidal Silver You Should Know

By Ida Dorsey

Colloidal silver has been used for many years for many things. It is a suspension of tiny silver ( a greyish-white metal) particles in a liquid and the benefits colloidal silver are numerous. It has been marketed as everything from an antibiotic to a dietary supplement. Its popularity peaked at the beginning of the last century, and now, with the advancements we have made in modern medicine, it has become all but obsolete.

The National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not view it as being effective or safe in managing any condition or disease, and both have issued a caution against its usage. As a matter of fact, both of these agencies have taken measures against bodies which have been boasting of its usage in their produce. The FDA in 1999 issued a veto on any over the counter medications using salts made from the greyish-white metal.

In addition to being banned by the FDA, this greyish-white metal has serious side effects. The precious metal is not absorbed in to your body, it builds up. This build up can cause a serious side effect called argyria, which gives you a bluish or greyish colour of the skin, eyes, nails, and gums. It is permanent and exacerbated by sunlight. Other side effects include kidney, liver and nervous system failure. It can also interfere with the body's absorption of drugs, including antibiotics, certain thyroid medicines, and certain rheumatoid arthritis medications.

In spite of the foregoing, there are some companies that still peddle silver as the panacea. It is favored by people who practice homeopathy. Those who advocate for its use refute the claim that it reacts with other medications, they also claim that it is active against many diseases and viruses. Although there is no scientific proof to back their claims, they insist that it is an effective antibiotic.

It is still used today as a dietary supplement. It's also used to treat emphysema and bronchitis. Other proponents of silver use it to treat certain skin conditions, including rosacea, eczema and psoriasis. Claims have also been made that it combats HIV and AIDs, as well as several other sexually transmitted infections.

As with anything, there are two sides to the story. Some people will stand by it and continue to use it and other similar products, and some will stand by the FDA and NCCAM's claims. Even though there is no scientific evidence to recommend this product, some will swear by it as a cure all.

Back in the 1920s and 1930s, it was believed to cure all ailments, it seems like this belief is still in force, today. There is a big divide between those who support the FDA on this matter and those who still believe in Colloidal Silver. There seem not to be an agreement on the horizon.

People need to be aware of the FDA ban and the potential harmful side effects, but those who use colloidal silver will continue to use is, and those who are opposed to it will continue to be opposed. There is no definitive answer to closing this particular divide, but as long as it's being used as a supposed 'cure all', there will still be this divide.
