Some Basics About Past Life Regression Therapy

By Jose Young

Many world religions teach us that the soul is the most important part of our existence. The soul, they say, is an immortal component of our existence that continues to exist even after we die. Past life regression therapy is based on this belief. That our souls were there before our present bodies came into existence. We (in the form of souls) have lived multiple life times before the memories of which are hidden in our unconscious minds.

Therapists who specialize in this area say that this therapy has numerous benefits that are mainly realized by unlocking the memories that relate to our previous life times. One of the area in which it is being widely applied is the treatment of various physical and mental illnesses. It is also frequently used in resolving social challenges such as those that relate to interpersonal relationships and the attainment of personal spiritual growth.

The main similarity between this technique and hypnotherapy is that both require the client to go into a state of trance. While in this state, the therapist will make suggestions that help the client to unlock the memories within their unconscious mind. A similar technique termed past life reading is slightly different because it is more of a passive process and has no therapeutic benefits.

Different persons have similar or differing accounts of their experiences. The memories may come vividly to the client (as if they are watching a movie), or may just be experienced as vague flashes. Memories may also be experienced by other senses such as smell (burning rubber, sweet smelling flowers, for example), auditory (such as a gunshot, music and a crying baby) or gustatory (sweet, salty or bitter taste). Put simply, persons get a full sensory experience.

The events that exist in our past lives are said to significantly affect our lives today. Since they operate at the subconscious level we are usually unaware of these influences. We may be affected positively or negatively depending on the underlying events. Examples of past events that may have a significant impact include personal achievements, broken vows, love, traumatic death and emotional debts among others.

The memories so unlocked tend to affect our relationships, behaviors, achievements and even our physical and mental health in the present life. Positive patterns are important as they help us rediscover the talents of our previous lifetimes and develop them to our benefit. They also bestow the wisdom that we once heard. Most importantly they help us understand our life purpose better. Negative patterns are associated with maladaptive behavior.

When you visit the therapist, you may be asked to choose a specific objective. Since the past is so huge and varied, having a specific intention helps in opening the doors only to the memories that are relevant to a specific situation. Such may include questions about specific circumstances in your life, unexplained illnesses, and troubled relationships and so on. Adopting this approach also makes it possible for us to put the memories that come to use in context.

Regression therapy achieves its healing effect on the soul by sorting out problems in past life times. The negative memories in the subconscious mind are usually dropped and the positive ones are reinforced. The use of this technique has continued to rise in popularity over the last few decades.
