An Empathetic Long Island Orthopedic Surgeon Provides Open MRI Options To Patients

By Allan Bigarda

There are claustrophobic people for whom riding in an elevator is a frightening experience. These same individuals would be unable to maintain their composure during a scan in the traditional MRI machine. An understanding Long Island orthopedic surgeon offers the option of an open MRI to allow this person to be tested without being traumatized.

This medical imaging machine can examine internal organs, structures and possibly detect early developing tumors as well. This obviates the need for exploratory surgery. Nuclear magnetic resonance can visualize what is causing pain or a troubling medical condition in a non-invasive way.

The contrast between soft tissues are shown more clearly than when a computed tomography or an x-ray is used. Now that the open MRI is available the doctor can see images of an individuals heart, brain and other internal structures. They are shown more clearly than those obtained with computed tomography or an x-ray.

The open MRI has no tube. It is completely open on one side as well as both ends. The patient lies flat and glides from one end to the other. There is one closed side and the top part that is over the bed. But, there is no enclosed space and anyone can remain completely comfortable.

Someone with one or two cochlear implants cannot undergo an MRI. The same is true for the cardiac patient with a pacemaker. In the case of the heart patient, it could prove fatal.

A main function of the Long Island orthopedic surgeon is helping sports figures recover from on-the-field injuries. A broken bone or torn ligament can be viewed as well as a shoulder dislocation or rotator cuff injury. When the open MRI is used, a family member can stand next to the patient for support while the scan is done. It helps to calm the nervous child or apprehensive senior citizen.
