A Brief Overview Of Sciatica

By Pamela Lindi Joseph

Sciatica is also known as sciatic nerve pain and is a condition found much too often in the world today. The pain begins in the lower back or lumbar area. The effects of the pain radiate into the legs, hips and buttocks, along the path of the large sciatic nerve. This nerve begins approximately at the coccyx and splits to extend the full length of each leg. When a person suffers from sciatic nerve pain, the activities of sleeping, sitting, standing or walking are very painful. The condition is best addressed using alternative therapy, particularly chiropractic manipulation.

Pain coming from the sciatic nerve is caused by compression of the nerve tissue at the lower end of the spinal column. The nerve separates into two main branches, one for each leg, at the lower spine. When there is irritation of the nerves, the result is sharp pain. The irritation of this major nerve pathway occurs when the intervertebral discs become compressed and bulge out from between the vertebrae pairs. The discs may be compressed, and provide less cushioning, or may actually rupture and leak into the surrounding tissue.

When the discs are compressed, it is usually due to a misalignment of the vertebrae column. The bones have insufficient room to provide space for the discs. The result is a bulge or herniation which extends into the surrounding nerve roots. The cushioning effect is lost, which can result in bone wear.

Techniques to alleviate sciatic pain under the guidelines of traditional medicine usually call for painkilling medications or even for surgical solutions. Such methods are hard on the body and are costly. In addition, they are seldom effective over the long term. Chiropractic methods are more likely to prevent surgery and are effective in long-term pain relief.

The use of chiropractic techniques to manipulate the lower spine is common in the United States. These professionals have the knowledge and experience to identify the problem location and provide measures to correct the misalignment. The techniques may be accomplished using machines or by direct manual methods.

Approximately nine out of ten patients report relief when chiropractic measures are applied. The common elements of therapy include traction, correction of misalignments, range of motion exercises and electrical muscle stimulation. Additional exercises are prescribed in order to loosen up and strengthen supporting muscles.

Alternative medicine users are helped in a majority of cases. This is true even when other methods of therapy, such as prescription medications, surgery, and physical therapy have failed. A success rate of these patients is reported at about sixty percent, after other methods have proven to be ineffective.

Using the techniques offered by chiropractic physicians for the pain of sciatica is a preferred alternative to anyone who doesn't want surgery. When a surgeon is consulted, the recommendation is to undergo surgery. However, if a chiropractor is consulted first, only about one in one hundred patients goes on to require surgical procedures.
