Consult A Chiropractor First For That Troublesome Neck Pain

By Jeremy K Grom

Neck pain affects the great majority of Americans at some stage during their lives, and can be excruciatingly painful for some. In addition, treatments are often ineffective and medications may not have much effect. Most people with this problem would be very grateful to find an effective solution which provides permanent relief from the agony.

The underlying cause of these pains may be a whiplash injury of some sort, or they may simply be due to poor posture. The average human head has the same weight as a bowling ball, and can easily strain the neck muscles and vertebrae. Stretching your head forward by only one inch adds an effective 10 pounds to the weight. Sudden movements also dramatically increase the burden on the muscles.

The most appropriate solutions can be obtained through conventional doctors, physiotherapists, or chiropractors. Doctors normally prescribe medications for the pain, and this would rule this avenue out for many people. In fact, analgesic drugs merely mask the symptoms for a while, and do not promote healing. All these healthcare professionals have different approaches, although there may be certain similarities.

It should be noted that chiropractors have been shown to provide the best chance of effecting lasting improvement and immediate relief from pain. They permit healing to occur by correcting any misalignments in the neck and stimulating the muscles. This approach works directly on the problem and therefore produces quicker results. Counseling on the correct posture may also be given.

In fact, scientific studies have found that patients who consult chiropractors are twice as likely to experience relief compared to other options. While prescription drugs often lose their effect over time or may cause other problems, adjustments provide more permanent relief. An important consideration is that chiropractic treatments are also safe, natural, and non-invasive, with no side-effects.

A study reported in the British Medical Journal found that chiropractic gave much quicker pain relief and also corrected the problem more quickly than either conventional medicine or physiotherapy. This study included treatment costs as well, and found that chiropractic treatments also cost about a third as much as the other two. This should make chiropractic an obvious first choice for any reasonable person.

Allied to this BMJ study, Consumer Report found that patients who consulted chiropractors were much more satisfied with the results as compared to the alternatives. When the results cited in the BMJ study are considered, this finding was to be expected. Of course, no therapy was totally effective, but your chances are much better when consulting a chiropractor, and you are also likely to end up paying far less for superior results.

From the above it is easy to draw the conclusion that consulting a chiropractor should be the first choice for people who are experiencing neck pain. Not only are you more likely to be happy with the results, but it will also cost much less. An actual cure for the problem is also more probable, so any relief is likely to be permanent.
