Reasons Why Tennessee Marijuana Legalization Should Be Done

By Allyson Burke

People living in Tennessee do not have to wonder why it is illegal to take marijuana. Instead, the government should give reasons why the drug is not legal, but so far the reasons presented are not convincing. All in all, people will always try to overturn the ban as long as they feel it is restrictive to them. Here is an examination of arguments for Tennessee marijuana legalization.

Marijuana illegality makes it more valuable than would be the case if it were legal. It provides teenagers with opportunities to make easy money by selling it to friends. If legalization was to end the excessive profits made from sale of the drug, teens would have a less incentive to sell it to their peers. A legal and regulated market for cannabis would reduce its use and sales among teenagers.

Cannabis is not a destructive drug, at least when compared to others such as tobacco and alcohol. Scientific facts have proven that it is not toxic to human beings, and almost impossible to overdose on it. Additionally, its addictive levels are much lower than that of alcohol and tobacco. It is therefore unfair and unjust for users to be treated more harshly than those who take other drugs.

The reasons put forward to justify cannabis illegality are based on selective distortion of scientific facts. The harm that is said to result from its use is quite exaggerated, with the claims that the drugs makes users mad not being supported by any scientific theories. A majority of such claim stem from ancient prejudices brought forward at a time when scientists did not know how the drugs effects appeared.

Since the cannabinoid receptor system was discovered in the late 1980s, concerns about the dangers of marijuana have not been proven by modern research. One cannot deny the fact that cannabis together with alcohol and tobacco are not to be used by children. However, adults over the last few decades have shown that cannabis can be moderately consumed with no harmful impact to an individual or the society as a whole.

Use of cannabis has positive attributes, like as a recreational drug having mild side effects and its medicinal value. Most people use it because they know what is good for them, especially those suffering from various serious ailments. It provides relief from nausea, pain, spasticity, and other symptoms that have not been successfully treated with convectional medications.

Many Tennessee adults prefer cannabis over alcohol as a moderate and mild way of relaxing. They use it as they choose to, with the reason for the choice being their personal observation that the drug has mild side effects and quite low dependence liability. Most users develop tolerance to its side effects, while those who cannot choose to quit.

Cannabis use is as a result of informed consent in which users conclude that the benefits they get from its use outweigh the risks by far. For most residents of Tennessee, perhaps the biggest risk of taking cannabis is the low probability of getting arrested.

In spite of the punishments and threats, people are still going on with calls for Tennessee marijuana legalization. This is because they know the drug has a place in the society.
