Despite The Benefits Associated With Herbs And Natural Supplements, They Have Risks

By Serena Price

Herbs and natural supplements are the oldest forms of medicines known to human beings. In fact, the majority of the modern medications are formulated from these substances. While the medicines currently used in medical institutions are highly refined and are subject to very strict regulations from institutions like Food and Drug Administrations, the same cannot be said of the former.

Herbs and natural supplements refer to all substances that are organic in nature, and are used for any health reason. They can be used for either treatment or boosting the body functionality but are not categorized as conventional medicines. They are extracts of any part of plants from roots, seeds, bark, leaves and fruits of a tree, shrub, weeds and fungus among other types of naturally grown plants.

Indeed, a big number of these organic health boosters leaves to their names. A number of them have been associated with great health benefits sparking huge demand as a result. Unknowingly, those whose condition does not allow using them too are drawn to this bandwagon. The impact is that such a noble coarse ends up being catastrophic.

Most of herbs and natural supplements have drug-like effects when used, and as such pose threats to your health when not used properly. Your starting point before using any of these options should be to research on their benefits, proper dosage, side effects and the possible situations when their uses are not recommended. In case you are pregnant, breast feeding or you have any chronic health condition, you cannot afford to fail consulting your doctor before using any of these products.

In most of the countries the organic health boosters are not regulated under the same laws as foods or medicines. The laws are a bit relaxed. In US for instance, the regulatory authority is Food and Drug Administration but the set of rules applied are different from those used in food and drugs. Manufacturers do not need have to get FDA permission to release their product to market. They are expected to follow good manufacturing practices, maintain certain standards and the FDA does product monitoring.

Breast feeding mothers, pregnant ladies and anyone with any chronic health conditions in particular are advised never to try any of these organic boosters without a clearance from a doctor. The other categories of people in danger are those under any form of medication. Mixing these products with medicines may come with life threatening effects. If you are planning to undergo surgery too, you should be careful.

So, how will you know that the product you intend to use is even organic in the first place? Generally, the manufacturers are required to include a number of information on the labels. Among these are the name, manufacturer name and address, the dosage, active ingredient and a complete list of all the ingredients used.

The bottom line is that what may appear like your way out of some health problem can instead be your nightmare. When you properly conduct your homework, consult a professional physician and keenly follow their instructions, use herbs and natural supplements as required and only when recommended, then you are likely to be one of those giving testimonials of their benefits.
