The Options Alternative Healing Modalities Patients May Use

By Eliza Mendoza

Medicine has grown by leaps and bounds in recent times. Many of the conditions that were a major diagnostic challenge are now easily identifiable and even treatable. There are many advanced techniques that are used in the management which has eased the pressure on the clinician. Even as this progress takes place, there are many alternative healing modalities that are widely used. There are similarities among the therapies depending on the cultural context in which they are practised.

Acupuncture has been practised for hundreds of years in many places. It is believed to have originated from the Asian subcontinent but has undergone several modifications as it has been adopted by other communities. In the treatment, the main thing that is done is insertion of special needles through predetermined points on the body. According to experts in this area, the needles help body energy to flow smoothly through the body. A balance is achieved and disease symptoms are relieved.

Chiropractic medicine is almost becoming synonymous with back pain. There are lots of people all over the world struggling with low back pain and this pain is at times unresponsive to medication. This is what maintains the large pool of clients for the chiropractors. There are many sources of back pain including the muscles, bones and ligaments. Chiropractic medicine aims at realigning the components through manual manipulation.

Yoga is another option that one may consider. It is a treatment that is used for mental, emotional and physical conditions. Historically, this treatment is strongly associated with the Indian subcontinent. It is particularly central to the practice of some religions such as Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Hinduism. Some of the mental conditions said to benefit from the treatment include anxiety and depression.

Yoga is closely related to ayurvedric medicine. The two treatments are very popular in the Indian culture and have almost the same indications. In ayurvedric medicine, the aim of therapy is to balance the body, the spirit and the mind. Once this balance has been achieved, a life force is stimulated. The force stimulated is proportional to the intensity of therapy.

Homeopathy is another common therapy. In homeopathy, there is a belief that the causes and cures of diseases are the same. This is known as the law of the similar and implies that if one knows what the causes of a given disease are than the cures can also be determined with ease. The treatment has its origins in Europe.

The list of options is endless. There are many other forms that are practised including hypnotherapy, naturopathy, aromatherapy, massage, hydrotherapy, nutrition therapy, massage and biofeedback among others. The side effect profile is tolerable for most of them. Commonly encountered side effects include pain, swelling and infections.

As you look for alternative healing modalities, you need to ensure that your preferred centre is licenced as per the local laws and regulations. This will guarantee you quality service and will reduce the chances of side effects. You also need to remember that these therapies are not backed by scientific evidence and should be used cautiously.
