Useful And Essential Facts About Queens NY Hernia

By Debra Perry

The word hernia normally finds use in a general sense. Hernia is a condition where body organs and tissues bulge or protrude through the structures that should be containing them. There are no boundaries to the type of organs of the body that can herniate. For example, the spine discs and brain tissues can herniate in a similar manner. Here are facts regarding Queens NY Hernia.

Even though all kinds of body organs and tissues can herniate, abdominal herniation is the most common kind of hernia. This condition occurs when the muscular structure of the abdomen presents weakness or an opening. This causes the lining of the abdominal cavity to protrude through the opening. The result is a bulge in the abdominal wall. The bulge becomes more noticeable when pressure in the abdomen is increased by tightening abdominal muscles.

Hernias are always made worse when people engage in activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure. Such activities include coughing, lifting, and even straining when urinating or having bowel movement. Abdominal hernias sometimes cause intestines and other abdominal organs to protrude through. When tissues become trapped through the opening, the medical complication that results is called incarceration.

Incarceration is usually a medical emergency that must be dealt with as soon as it occurs. What makes incarceration serious is that it causes blood supply to the trapped organs to be stopped. Once blood supply is stopped or cut, the organs that are incarcerated may be damaged or they may die. Surgery is usually the only way of correcting this medical situation.

Abdominal hernia is more common and statistics show that at least 10 percent of Americans suffer from this condition at one point in their life. This condition usually occurs in both men and women regardless of the age. On the other hand, the condition is more common in men than in women.

In most instances, abdominal hernias happen in the area around the groin. Several factors cause this tendency. The natural anatomical weakness is the first reason why the groin area is prone to this problem. Incomplete muscle coverage in the groin area makes it susceptible to having openings or rapturing and weakness. A light opening can also enlarge as time goes by and lead to a serious situation.

Also, the groin area is vulnerable to hernia due to the natural upright posture assumed by people when sitting or standing. More pressure is put on the bottom of the abdomen by this posture. More stress caused to the muscles that are already weakened in the groin area by the higher pressure. The stress and pressure lead to tears that lead hernias.

There are several different kinds of abdominal hernias in existence. Some of these hernias usually coexist. The main types of hernias are ventral, femoral, and navel hernias. Femoral hernias can be classified into direct and indirect hernias. Pain and swelling are some of the major symptoms of the various kinds of hernias.
