Dry Eye Symptoms And Treatment For Dry Eye At Boardman Family Eyecare

By Dr. J. Hirschl Od

Dr. Hirschl of Boardman Family Eyecare sees many patients with dry eyes from all over the greater Majoning County and Youngstown suburbs. Dry eye is a recognized eye condition which affects many people. The risk of developing dry eye syndrome increases with age, and dry eye symptoms are more common in women, people who spend two or more hours a day using a computer, and those with certain eyelid infections. Although dry eye is a significant problem throughout the year, Dr. Hirschl notes that more patients complain of dry eye symptoms between November and March.

Women tend to experience dry eyes more than men, and frequent computer users will often notice dry eye as well. Older patients are also more prone to dry eyes. While you could get lubricating eye drops over the counter at any local pharmacy, it is a good idea to consult with an eye care professional for advice about which one to choose and how to use it most effectively. It is important to know that lubricating eye drops only relieve scratching, burning and irritation temporarily, but they do not solve the problem. Dry eye syndrome is usually a chronic eye condition.

Severe dry eye cases may require stronger treatments. To enhance the eyes' own tear production, there are prescription medications that Dr. Hirschl can provide.

Dry eye symptoms are a good reason to schedule an eye exam with your eye doctor, even if it has been less than a year since your last comprehensive eye exam.

What happens during a dry eye exam? There are a number of tests to assess dry eyes. The level of tear production will be examined. The stability of the tear film will be measured. The surface of the eyes will be observed for signs of damage. Eyelid health will be taken into account. Most importantly, to diagnose dry eye syndrome, the optometrist will listen to the patient's description of his or her dry eye experience and history.

Certain medications are known to cause dry eyes as a side effect, and some systemic conditions play a role in the development of dry eyes as well.

Prescription eye drops: These go a step further and actually elicit natural tear production.

Other outside causes, like a strong wind, can cause your eyes to dry out. That is why it is a good idea to always have sunglasses.

At Boardman Family Eyecare, you know you will get the personalized care you need.

While using your computer, take a break every 20 minutes to rest your eyes, and - it may sound funny, but - don't forget to blink!

While using a computer, don't forget to blink. Take frequent breaks too. If the environment is dry, perhaps because of a heater during the winter, use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. Make use of protective eyewear during outdoor activities, especially if it's windy.
